Can you choose where you get stationed in the Air Force?
Whenever possible, we try to match an Air Force need with your assignment preferences. During Basic Military Training (BMT), enlisted Airmen will have a chance to list 16 location preferences—up to eight stateside and eight overseas—by base, state, region or country.

Can your girlfriend live with you on base in the Air Force?
No. You cannot be assigned housing for a family without dependents. And no one can live in your quarters who is not a dependent. Unless you are married she will not be recognized as your dependent.
Can females shave at basic training?
Almost immediately after arrival, your hair will be cut so short that it almost feels like you were shaved bald (guys only). After the initial haircut, you’ll get a trim at least once per week during basic training. Except for the Navy, women do not have to get their hair cut.
Do you swim in Air Force basic training?
While there is swimming training for jobs across all branches of the US military, it’s the Navy and Coast Guard that require members to pass a swimming test twice each year. Similarly, Air Force Officers Training and my initial assignment didn’t require any swimming either.
Does the Air Force pick your job?
It depends upon your qualifications and what jobs have current/projected openings. If the job you want is not available, your only choices are to choose a different job, or not enlist. The Air Force has divided all of their jobs into four aptitude areas (General, Electronic, Mechanical, and Administrative).
What can disqualify you from joining the airforce?
There are age, citizenship, physical, education, height/weight, criminal record, medical, and drug history standards that can exclude you from joining the military.

How long are you stationed at a base in the Air Force?
When you enlist in the Air Force, you incur an overall eight-year Military Service Obligation with the option of a four- or six-year active-duty service commitment to the Air Force. Qualified individuals who enlist for four years active duty will incur an Inactive Ready Reserve obligation of four years.

Is it disrespectful for a civilian to salute a soldier?
Civilians should not salute the American Flag with a military salute. The military salute is considered a privilege earned by those who have served in the Armed Forces and is reserved for official protocols. Civilians should follow specific etiquette during the National Anthem.
Can my girlfriend visit me on-base?
Girls are allowed to visit men in the barracks, but you cannot spend the night. You must sign in with the duty at the front desk. The door to the barracks room is supposed to be propped open during the visit. Rules may vary for different units, but usually you must sign out by 10 PM.
